Porter Street Adventure
Many years before I was born, my father was bitten by a werewolf while hunting in the Icehorn Mountains. That night was his first transformation and he would forever be a werewolf. With many years of solitude, he learned more about his curse and how he could live safely amongst others. He moved to the edge of the Eldeen Reaches just east of Alvirad where he met my human mother, Ramona, and they fell in love. He couldn’t keep his secret for long and revealed it to my mother on a night of a full moon. He ran into the Reaches and returned the next morning to find my mother waiting for him. They were married in Alvirad and continued to live on the outskirts of town.
The day before I was born, my mother’s contractions were more painful than usual. My father took her to a place where he would seek refuge after his transformation, The Grove of Guardian Trees. It was a magical place that even he can’t explain. The next night, it was a full moon. Her contractions were getting worse. The reason was that I was transforming while in the womb. My mother was strong and gave birth to me in the middle of transformation. My mother said I was disfigured and it was likely that I was going to die. The magic of the Grove was what saved me and my mother. We started returning to Alvirad with my father watching over us in his werewolf state. Suddenly, a dire wolf found us and my father immediately jumped in to defend us. He motioned to us to run and get to safety. My mother was able to carry me back to Alvirad where we took shelter in a nearby stable. After waiting for days, my father never returned. Some family friends searched where he was last seen and there was no trace of him and he hasn’t been seen since. My mother then named me Felix, in memory of my father.
We remained at the outskirts of Alvirad and I started going to school in the city when I was about six years old. I knew right away that I was different. Most of the children would make fun of me for the way I looked. The problem was that I had no idea who or what I was. I was able to make it through four years and then I couldn’t take the constant belittling of my classmates. I decided to go back home and take charge as the man of the house. It was that year on my tenth birthday that I received my first short bow.
I started practicing right away on tree trunks and I practiced for hours until I wanted to start hitting moving targets. One day, I saw a little white rabbit at the edge of the forest and I began my first hunt. The first two to three shots were not even close. My fourth shot spooked it and it ran into the forest. After chasing it for an hour, my shot finally hit it and I was excited to bring something home for dinner. However, I felt like I was being watched when a bear came to attack me for the rabbit. I backed up against a tree in shock. That’s when he came in from the treetops, roared and swatted him with his paw-like hand. I passed out due to the shock and woke up at home with my mother. In the corner of the room was the cloaked man that saved me from the bear. He came over and he introduced himself. I’ve only known him as Antilles. He then told me that he and I are not so different. He took off his cloak and I was amazed. Our hands were similar, our feet were identical and I looked like a ten-year-old version of him. With permission from my mother, he asked to teach me how to use a bow and how to become an effective hunter to feed myself and my mother.
For four years, I practiced hard as an apprentice for Antilles. He was my mentor, but he was also like a father to me. He taught me archery, tracking, climbing, jumping and anything to help me become an effective hunter. I would visit every other day in his camp he had in the Eldeen Reaches a couple miles east from home. It was a camp since he was nomadic and traveled a lot before he rescued me. He lived a simple life and was very wise.
One day, when I was fourteen years old, I was walking home with my mother and one of our mules from Alvirad with basic rations for the week. We were ambushed by three bandits. Two of them attacked me from behind and bound me. My mother was seized by the leader and held at knifepoint to surrender everything. Around my mother neck was a pendant from my father. My mother refused to give it up and the leader stabbed her right in front of me. He then pointed to me as if I was next when he was pierced in the shoulder by an arrow and drops to the ground. I look back to where the arrow came from and Antilles grabbed to other two threw them both aside to release me. He cut my bonds and, by that time, the bandits had already ran without securing our rations. I immediately went to my mother, but it was too late. She lost too much blood. Before she drew her last breath, she told to take the pendant and to never forget her or my father. I kissed her on the forehead and she passed out, dead. I stood up and turned around to find a cloaked Antilles and he was holding another cloak. He threw it to me and told me to put it on. He said it was no longer safe for us here. I told him I can’t go until I bury her. We were able to bury her, say prayers and we moved on.
We left Alvirad and journeyed through the Eldeen Reaches for three years. He taught me about the land, the animals and the magical forces of the Reaches. When in the Reaches, he finally revealed to me who I was. I am a rare breed called a shifter. I cannot fully transform into a werewolf, but I can partially shift for short periods of time. I guess that explains why I love the wolf so much. We finally returned to the capital of the Eldeen Reaches, Greenheart, after visiting there many times. On that day, there was an archery contest and Antilles encouraged me to compete. I’ve been shooting a bow since I was ten; so I decided to give it a shot. Before the competition, Antilles gave me this old longbow and said “with this long bow, you will never miss.” I was doubtful, but I trusted him. To my surprise, I hit every mark with precision and accuracy. However, I came in second place to an elf named Keanan of The Riverwood. He was incredibly skilled and only a couple years my senior. He had a mentor with him as well. His mentor, who was also an elf, approached me and Antilles. It was unusual because our mentors greeted each other like they were the best of friends. Antilles introduced me to him. His name was Qinnorin and they met each other at The Adventurer’s Academy in Lake Galifar. Qinnorin commended me for my talent, despite the fact that I lost, and that I have a very good teacher. He said I can improve my skills and much more at the academy. After consulting Antilles, I decided it was time to move on to bigger things. I got on a ship with Qinnorin and Keanan for the academy. Unfortunately, Antilles decided to stay behind and I had to say goodbye.
I started off at the academy and Keanan and I became very good friends. We are still very competitive with each other, but we are still friends. He would always back me up since I was one of the only shifters at the academy. There were so few of us that I sometimes felt like I was the only one. It been three years at the academy now and I’ve learned more than I’ve ever learned. It is my fourth year at the Academy and the Halls of Dorean are approaching. Finally, it’s my chance to show them all what I can really do!!
